As you could see on the My roots, My style! x London Fashion Week live stream the last five days the British capital was devoted to fashion. Apart from live streaming the event, My roots, My style! was there to find out what the designers had planned for A/W12. If there is one thing that caught the attention immediately it is that everything is possible on the catwalk in London. From classic looks to Hare Krishna inspired outfits, they all made their appearance during London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2012. Well, they don’t call it British eccentricity for nothing.
The week kicked off with a fashion experience and party by Swedish brand Björn Borg. On the eve of London Fashion Week they organised a lights off event at the iconic Battersea Power Station. By showcasing a 4D short film the brand showed how to mix fashion with technology. To give the event a Scandinavian flavour they transformed the Battersea power station into a wonderland with sauna’s, hot tubs and a snow covered forest. To top it off Swedish star Robyn and I blame coco performed and made the crowd dance the night away to the official start of London Fashion Week.
Ant!podium showed a collection inspired by East London,VERMIN, as the collection is called, reflected the streets of the unique London neighbourhood that is going to be home of the Olympics in 2012. This resulted in sporty yet chic looks in camel, lilac, nude and accents of green and blue. Check out the video for more.
Total opposite of the above urban fashion is the A/W 12 collection of Nicole Farhi. The veteran of the catwalk in London took her audience on a trip back to the Secession movement in Vienna and French Art Nouveau. Set in the Victorian Royal Courts of Justice, the collection consisted of wool jackets, printed skirts while using innovative fabrics that gave the collection a modern twist using laminated jacquards and needle punched wools just to name a few of the fabrics she used. Every piece was a work of art on its own and gave the feeling of not wanting the show to stop. Not to mention the feeling that the venue gave to it all. To experience it yourself take a look at the video.
Speaking of beautiful venues, Micheal van der Ham opted for the Old Billingsgate Market right next to the river Thames to gave his view of what A/W12 should be like. Again a feminine collection that makes you want to rock every piece. Colourful, playful and sexy, yet classic and sophisticated pieces. Using organza, metallic wool, lace and sequins which every woman loves. For a closer look start the video.

And if we’re talking sequins, we have to mention the king of sequins Ashish. With his collection named Bollywouldn’t we could aspect that, for the first time ever, the designer would reflect his Indian background in the collection. As he described in his notes his muse would wear anything from tie-dye silk kurtas to Hare Krishna tracksuits and scarves. And yes, it was definitely visible on the catwalk at Somerset House. Curious? Take a look at the video.
One of the highlights of this season, maybe because Kanye West was FROW-ing maybe just because of the wearable collection, must be Mark Fast. Not only did the designer showed beautiful knitwear. It wasn’t boring, but sexy and comfortable which can be hard if your looking for the right knit. Inspired by the film Fire Walk with Me he titled his A/W 12 collection Questions in a World of Blue. Consisting of different colours, shapes and sizes the designer wowed his audience, and yes even Mr. West applauded. Want to know what made Kanye applaud? Click on the video.
The collections in London showed that we have at least one thing to look forward to when the cold comes...

Skye Townsend - Los Angeles, United States
She’s that cool girl you see on the street and immediately want to steal her look. Her name is Skye Townsend, an eighteen-year-old rising star. The girl can sing, act and knows how to rock some style. Curious how the latter started? Inspired by her mother’s lace-up heels little Sky, who was unable to tie her own shoes, taught herself her first steps to adulthood. “I was determined to put them on. I spent hours sitting there and teaching myself how to tie the laces, just so that they’d look right. Hours later, I succeeded by myself. A cute pair of shoes can always motivate you to get the job done,” says Skye.

Her surroundings are the style influences that resulted in the self-acclaimed hippie she is today. So did her mother and sister taught her that there isn’t just one style. And the city she resides, Los Angeles, is all about the hippie laidback look where mixing and matching of seasonal pieces is allowed. “Only in LA do you see winter boots and a scarf with a crop top and denim shorts. I am guilty of this,” confides Skye. Not to forget about her Native-American background that makes her opt for Native-American prints, beaded jewellery, printed ponchos and her favourite pair of shoes are moccasins. But the girl never forgets the true meaning of the items she’s wearing, such as a cross. “I feel like recently people forget what a cross symbolizes. So many designers are tossing it all over their designs and making it as common as a star or heart. Although I love the way a cross looks, I love what it represents,” says the fashionista.

Skye describes her personal style as ‘me’ and tips everyone to stay true to themselves as well. Therefore she can find herself in her favourite fashion quote by Adriana Lima, “Be sure what you want and be sure about yourself. Fashion is not just beauty, it's about a good attitude. You have to believe in yourself and be strong.” This is what she keeps in mind when she is creating her looks, which is in her own words, like painting the perfect colors next to one another. Being herself and believing in her own esthetics ultimately resulted in people constantly submitting her photos for fashion blogs. This is when Skye first felt like a fashionista. “I never considered myself one before because I simply dressed like myself. But, I love inspiring people to take risks with what they can wear.”

Although this fashionista recently experienced her most memorable fashion moment, her first photo shoot fitting where she could experiment with glamorous pieces, she still has some fashion pursuits. “I eventually would like to create a line that reflects my personal style. I’d create pieces for all of the risk takers and funky artists. I would also love to own a store out in the Los Angeles area.” So, maybe one day she will be mentioned in the same breath as her favourite LA based designer Brian Lichtenberg, who she describes as eclectic and dope. But for the time being she keeps on expressing her individuality in the entertainment industry. As she believes it is imperative that people can relate to an artist’s style. Keep doing you, girl…
Skye is currently playing the role of Jade on BET’s 8 Days a Week.

My roots, My style!
If there is one language fashionista’s speak worldwide it must be the language of fashion. Still they are all unique in their own way. But what is it that makes them so unique? Where does the love for fashion comes from? And how does their roots influence their style? At My roots, My style you can read how women worldwide declare their love to fashion. Today you can read how Dita Von Teese fell in love with fashion by watching 40s movies. Stay tuned for more fashionista's...
Dita Von Teese - Los Angeles, United States
She is elegant, sexy and the embodiment of a timeless fashionista. Dita Von Teese is known as the queen of burlesque, but with her head-turning personal style she is a fashion icon as well. However, she doesn’t let both occasions intertwine with each other. “I maintain a very distinctive difference between my onstage style and my offstage style, so I wouldn’t say that burlesque influences the way I dress. I wouldn't ever wear anything I wear onstage in real life,” says Dita. Her amazing eye for fashion was formed when she was a little girl. “My earliest fashion memory is arguing with my mother about wearing my only fancy dress to school every day, and wanting shiny black patent leather shoes. I constantly fantasized about being a grown lady that could pick out her own clothes! I was most influenced by the women in the classic 40s films my mother liked to watch. The 40s were particularly interesting for me, especially the beauty of red lipstick in Technicolor. I was also enamoured with my Great Aunt Opal, who wore green eye shadow, red lipstick, heavy eyeliner and had bright red hair and smoked with a cigarette holder.”

Dita grew up in Michigan and she believes that being from such an un-glamorous place has shaped her goal of creating her own glamour. Today she describes her style as nostalgic, but timeless and sensual. “I love to exude sexuality by being covered up. I never wear skirts above the knee, and I love the layers, stockings, garters, gloves and veils. I feel sexiest dressed to the nines, baring very little flesh. It creates mystery and glamour, and it's always age-appropriate. I won't need to change my style much when I'm 60 or 70.” So, who better to give us a style tip than the embodiment of classic style? “Be more daring, try something new. Don't buy clothes that are "of the moment", that "IT" thing that is so popular will be dated, especially after all the magazines have exploited it and we all remember when, where, what.” And she even likes to share her style secret with us! “My style secret to looking pulled together is mastering the art of the quick chignon, swipe of powder, lipstick and sunglasses, plus a fabulous coat!”

When it comes to Dita’s style choices she opts for black instead of colour clothing. “Black is always chic and you can't go wrong, so when in doubt choose black. It's a showcase for a woman's beauty. Accent it with jewellery, or a bright red or fuchsia lip.” A red lip is something that Dita believes will never be out of fashion. In a men’s wardrobe she likes simplicity as well. “I like men who dress simply and elegantly, without flash. I like traditional menswear,” she admits. It is obvious that Dita is not ordinary when it comes to glamour. And so isn’t her first moment that she felt like a fashionista. “Before anyone would lend me clothes, Jean-Paul Gaultier gave me free reign to wear anything from his haute couture archives…"even to the grocery store", he said. And meanwhile, stylists ask me all the time how I was able to borrow from it, because he doesn't let just anyone wear his clothes; it's very personal for him,” explains Dita. And the extraordinaire goes on. “Being referenced in American Vogue for spearheading 40's era style was my most memorable fashion moment. I started dressing vintage because I couldn't afford designer clothes,” confides the burlesque star.

For the love of fashion Dita creates and performs burlesque shows. And she is rocking a stunning personal style. Wonder if there is anything more she dreams of in the world of fashion? “There is one beautiful Jean Paul Gaultier gown from the "Hussard" collection that I've borrowed twice. I've always wanted to own it and wear it again and again, so I would love to be able to afford it one day…”
Dita is having a lingerie collection coming out soon, a small dress line based on some favorite items in her vintage collection, and her first perfume. She has her own brand of signature stockings at this website and books, dvds, and other memorabilia at Dita.net
