She’s that cool girl you see on the street and immediately want to steal her look. Her name is Skye Townsend, an eighteen-year-old rising star. The girl can sing, act and knows how to rock some style. Curious how the latter started? Inspired by her mother’s lace-up heels little Sky, who was unable to tie her own shoes, taught herself her first steps to adulthood. “I was determined to put them on. I spent hours sitting there and teaching myself how to tie the laces, just so that they’d look right. Hours later, I succeeded by myself. A cute pair of shoes can always motivate you to get the job done,” says Skye.

Her surroundings are the style influences that resulted in the self-acclaimed hippie she is today. So did her mother and sister taught her that there isn’t just one style. And the city she resides, Los Angeles, is all about the hippie laidback look where mixing and matching of seasonal pieces is allowed. “Only in LA do you see winter boots and a scarf with a crop top and denim shorts. I am guilty of this,” confides Skye. Not to forget about her Native-American background that makes her opt for Native-American prints, beaded jewellery, printed ponchos and her favourite pair of shoes are moccasins. But the girl never forgets the true meaning of the items she’s wearing, such as a cross. “I feel like recently people forget what a cross symbolizes. So many designers are tossing it all over their designs and making it as common as a star or heart. Although I love the way a cross looks, I love what it represents,” says the fashionista.

Skye describes her personal style as ‘me’ and tips everyone to stay true to themselves as well. Therefore she can find herself in her favourite fashion quote by Adriana Lima, “Be sure what you want and be sure about yourself. Fashion is not just beauty, it's about a good attitude. You have to believe in yourself and be strong.” This is what she keeps in mind when she is creating her looks, which is in her own words, like painting the perfect colors next to one another. Being herself and believing in her own esthetics ultimately resulted in people constantly submitting her photos for fashion blogs. This is when Skye first felt like a fashionista. “I never considered myself one before because I simply dressed like myself. But, I love inspiring people to take risks with what they can wear.”

Although this fashionista recently experienced her most memorable fashion moment, her first photo shoot fitting where she could experiment with glamorous pieces, she still has some fashion pursuits. “I eventually would like to create a line that reflects my personal style. I’d create pieces for all of the risk takers and funky artists. I would also love to own a store out in the Los Angeles area.” So, maybe one day she will be mentioned in the same breath as her favourite LA based designer Brian Lichtenberg, who she describes as eclectic and dope. But for the time being she keeps on expressing her individuality in the entertainment industry. As she believes it is imperative that people can relate to an artist’s style. Keep doing you, girl…

She is elegant, sexy and the embodiment of a timeless fashionista. Dita Von Teese is known as the queen of burlesque, but with her head-turning personal style she is a fashion icon as well. However, she doesn’t let both occasions intertwine with each other. “I maintain a very distinctive difference between my onstage style and my offstage style, so I wouldn’t say that burlesque influences the way I dress. I wouldn't ever wear anything I wear onstage in real life,” says Dita.Her amazing eye for fashion was formed when she was a little girl. “My earliest fashion memory is arguing with my mother about wearing my only fancy dress to school every day, and wanting shiny black patent leather shoes. I constantly fantasized about being a grown lady that could pick out her own clothes! I was most influenced by the women in the classic 40s films my mother liked to watch. The 40s were particularly interesting for me, especially the beauty of red lipstick in Technicolor. I was also enamoured with my Great Aunt Opal, who wore green eye shadow, red lipstick, heavy eyeliner and had bright red hair and smoked with a cigarette holder.”

Dita grew up in Michigan and she believes that being from such an un-glamorous place has shaped her goal of creating her own glamour. Today she describes her style as nostalgic, but timeless and sensual. “I love to exude sexuality by being covered up. I never wear skirts above the knee, and I love the layers, stockings, garters, gloves and veils. I feel sexiest dressed to the nines, baring very little flesh. It creates mystery and glamour, and it's always age-appropriate. I won't need to change my style much when I'm 60 or 70.” So, who better to give us a style tip than the embodiment of classic style? “Be more daring, try something new. Don't buy clothes that are "of the moment", that "IT" thing that is so popular will be dated, especially after all the magazines have exploited it and we all remember when, where, what.” And she even likes to share her style secret with us! “My style secret to looking pulled together is mastering the art of the quick chignon, swipe of powder, lipstick and sunglasses, plus a fabulous coat!”

When it comes to Dita’s style choices she opts for black instead of colour clothing. “Black is always chic and you can't go wrong, so when in doubt choose black. It's a showcase for a woman's beauty. Accent it with jewellery, or a bright red or fuchsia lip.” A red lip is something that Dita believes will never be out of fashion. In a men’s wardrobe she likes simplicity as well. “I like men who dress simply and elegantly, without flash. I like traditional menswear,” she admits. It is obvious that Dita is not ordinary when it comes to glamour. And so isn’t her first moment that she felt like a fashionista. “Before anyone would lend me clothes, Jean-Paul Gaultier gave me free reign to wear anything from his haute couture archives…"even to the grocery store", he said. And meanwhile, stylists ask me all the time how I was able to borrow from it, because he doesn't let just anyone wear his clothes; it's very personal for him,” explains Dita. And the extraordinaire goes on. “Being referenced in American Vogue for spearheading 40's era style was my most memorable fashion moment. I started dressing vintage because I couldn't afford designer clothes,” confides the burlesque star.

For the love of fashion Dita creates and performs burlesque shows. And she is rocking a stunning personal style. Wonder if there is anything more she dreams of in the world of fashion? “There is one beautiful Jean Paul Gaultier gown from the "Hussard" collection that I've borrowed twice. I've always wanted to own it and wear it again and again, so I would love to be able to afford it one day…”

She started out in the fashion industry and had her big break styling artists like Beyonce and Ciara. But with a voice and style like hers, it can’t be argued that this lady belongs to be in the spotlight herself. Lindiwe Suttle pursued her dream and is now working as a performing artist and singer/songwriter. She was born and raised in the US by a South African mother and American father. Later on she moved to South Africa where she got crowned to be most stylish South African beyond other style recognitions. But long before these recognitions, Lindiwe knew how to rock it! “When I was five years old I begged my mom to buy me a pair of cowboy boots and I would insist on wearing them with everything, even formal dresses. My mom would say to me, ‘You don’t wear cowboy boots with nice dresses.’ So, I snuck them out of the house and wore them but got caught red-handed wearing them. Looking back I think they look great with the dress. I guess I had my own personal style at an early age.”

Like many of us, Lindiwe’s surroundings played a role in creating her fashion sense. “My mom was my style icon. In middle school, I use to wear her clothes to school without her knowing. My aunts from South Africa were like my big sisters, they lived with us growing up and they always had cool clothing. I use to sneak their clothes in a bag and change on the way to school to look more hip and to be different than the kids wearing jeans and t-shirts,” she reveals. Even today her roots are visible in the way she dresses. “On my father’s side, my great-great grandfather was a Cherokee Native American chief. I noticed when I started performing live, I would always look for feather pieces as part of my costume. Maybe this is my Native American heritage coming through,” Lindiwe explains.

Lindiwe describes her style as vintage meets rock-n-roll. “I am continually in conflict with the ladylike side, my vintage, and the androgynous rock-n-roll boyish side.” And with her love for South Africa she likes to add items of her favourite local designers to her look. “I try to support as many local designers as possible, because I believe in their talent. Lara Klawikowski is my ultimate. She is now designing all the looks for my debut album shoot and music video. I attend many student shows searching for new talent to commission to make things for my live shows. I found Lameez Claasen, a second year design student whose jacket we used for the cover of my single, Man Made Moon .” The singer also likes to add other favourites to her look, which she believes will always be in fashion: a leather jacket, black blazer, pencil skirt, denim, classic white shirt and a LBD.

This fashionista grew up around stylish women and always believed in the art of dressing up. Therefore she can identify with her favourite fashion quote by Karl Lagerfeld. “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.” She adds. “Dressing up is what my mother taught me and is instilled in me.” With her mothers advise in mind and her own personal style that she created since the age of five, Linwide keeps on expressing herself to the world. By doing so she earned her place in the spotlight, which resulted in amazing fashion moments such as, winning ‘best dressed’ in high school, voted ‘Women of the Year Style Icon’ by Glamour Magazine in 2010, voted Most Stylish South African in 2010 at the SA Style Awards and meeting designer Christian Lacroix.

While these acknowledgements might seem enough for most women, this lady is determined and dreams about more. “I have just written a song about being addicted to fashion and our quest for individualism, where I mention Lagerfeld and McQueen. My fashion dream would be to have this song play at every major fashion week and get it in the hands of every fashion designer I admire and the like of Anna Wintour, Franca Sozzani and Andre Leon Talley. I also want Viktor and Rolf to one day design all my costumes for a tour.” Can music get more fashionable than this?

“A typical Chinese style secret to top your look off is wearing fake eyelashes,” says Mayo Wo, a creative fashion blogger who lives in Hong Kong, China. As a little girl she started to express her love for fashion by styling her Barbie dolls, instead of playing with them. While other people around her weren’t into fashion, she decided to go her own way. “I think my style is quite independent and different from the people around me,” she explains.

Even today her independency goes on. Although she grew up in Hong Kong, Mayo her style is more influenced by the West, because she got in touch with western culture by western movies, celebrities and magazines. “Hong Kong fashion is very much influenced by trends in Japan and Korea, and most of the clothes available on the street are designed in Japan and Korea. But I love to mix and match them with some western or vintage inspired elements to create looks that are more interesting and special,” says Mayo.

Mayo’s East meets West look results in her self described sweet, preppy and romantic style and being a fan of everything kooky and quirky, influenced by singer Florence Welch. As a self acclaimed shoe girl, her must haves are sky-high chunky Mary Jane shoes, but she creates her signature look by adding socks to them. “I can advise every woman to add socks or a belt to their look to create layers.”

Although she doesn’t see herself as a fashionista yet, her style choices have already caught the attention of the Chinese fashion industry. “Recently I experienced one of my most memorable fashion moments by being a guest stylist for a Hong Kong based magazine.” But Mayo has many more to achieve in the world of fashion. She wants to be a fashion do-everything-er. As she believes fashion is what makes life more beautiful and interesting…

From Caught out there to Brave . And from music videos, to red carpet appearances. This bossy lady always proved her style to be young, fresh N’ new . Even though she is always fashion forward and a style icon to many around the globe, fashion started accidentally for Kelis. “As a little girl I always dressed myself. All of a sudden people start bringing fashion up and asking me about my style. While I wasn’t really realising what I was doing or trying to be a part of something,” explains the singer.

She grew up among a lot of women around her, but like most of us, her mother was a key figure. “I was always influenced by my mother. She was this amazing woman I looked up to while growing up. I also have three sisters, but my mother was the ‘lady’ who stood out.” Besides her role model, New York had and still has an influence on her fashion sense. “I am straight forward, which is typical New York. Apart from that I am a walker. I walk everywhere I go to. So fashion also has to be practical. For example flats instead of heels,” she says.

Kelis describes herself as an emotional dresser. Which means that her mood is important to decide what she wears. And just like it al started she still doesn’t follow any fashion rules or tries to be part of something. “There was never really a moment that I felt like a fashionista. I just always wear what I love, even to the grocery store. All day, every day.” But as a woman it is important to her that what she wears fits her body and personality. So, if there is one thing she wants, it is to make other women aware about this. “Fashion is about knowing yourself and knowing your body. When you make style choices, make sure you know who you are and what you can wear,” she tips.

With an amazing career in the music business and a passion for fashion she knows how to combine the two like no other. “I believe that music has always influenced fashion and contrariwise. Working in this industry makes it possible for me to dress up for certain events.” Although she always look stunning in her videos and dressed up at events, like wearing Alexander McQueen shoes as one of her most memorable fashion moments. At the end of the day, and as a true American, she chooses the simplicity of jeans as the item that will never go out of fashion. Well, success didn’t change the girl...

From the moment she hit our TV screens as the star on MTV’s ‘Laguna Beach’ and ‘The Hills’, we all knew that this girl has some style going on. Even off-screen her passion lives on, as she works as a fashion designer on her own clothing lines and bestselling author. But long before the rest of the world discovered her talent and style, Lauren Conrad’s heart was already captured by fashion. “I remember making custom dresses for my Barbie dolls when I was about ten years old,” says Lauren.

Her environment played a crucial role in becoming the style icon she is today, with her mother as key figure. “My mom has always been very fashionable so she was my first inspiration, but also living by the beach. A lot of my fashion choices are influenced by the warm weather and the California lifestyle,” she explains. Which makes it possible for the fashionista to identify with the typical Los Angeles style. “LA-style can be described as something that is casual enough to wear during the day, but nice enough to transition into night. Many people are always on the go and it is nice to be able to wear a dress with flats to go to the beach and then pair it with heels to get you to a dinner at night.”

The native Californian describes her personal style as ‘California casual’, based on how she feels and what inspires her that day. She tops her look off with her fashion essentials, a great pair of shoes and a basic black blazer. In her daily style choices you can find a mix of colour and black, designs by her favourite LA-based designer ‘Alice and Olivia’ and jeans. As she believes the last one will never be out of fashion. But for the love of fashion, she puts herself to the test from time to time. “Sometimes I wear heels that are impossible to walk in,” Lauren reveals. Apart from this fashion no-go the girl never goes wrong style-wise, so who better to give us a style tip? “Dress for your body type and wear clothes that fit. It doesn’t matter if something is the biggest trend, if it doesn’t look good on you then it isn’t worth wearing.”

As her mother as one of her major style influences, it was also at home that Lauren first felt like a fashionista. “When I wore my moms high heels around the house, I knew fashion was my destiny.” This resulted in amazing fashion moments throughout the years, including designing a dress for the Emmy Awards as ultimate highlight. Lauren admits that she is living her dreams at the moment. And there is no doubt that she isn’t, with her newest line, Paper Crown to be out this fall. It won’t be long that she will achieve the same level of successes as her favourite persons in the industry, like designer Phillip Lim. “I love his style and designs.” While simultaneously her newest novel Sugar & Spice is doing very well. She encourages everyone to buy a copy. “It is the final in the series and it will bring the whole LA Candy saga full circle,” she recommends. Lauren has proven to be a multi-talented fashion girl at heart, but the true meaning of fashion to her? “A reflection of who you are and how you feel at that moment…”

“To me fashion is transient, style is what really lasts,” says Matthew Hambly. Influenced by older people in school, friends, music videos and TV shows, like ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ he now works as a journalist and stylist in London, United Kingdom. His job has made him more aware of having to look presentable, but his love for fashion started a long time ago. “I remember cutting the sleeves off a checked shirt that my mother had given me, so that I could be like Guns N’ Roses.”

Today he describes his style as classic. “I like basic items like blue jeans, white t-shirts and chunky cardigans.” This goes along with some typical London and British accents. “London has so many different styles. You could be a punk, a hipster, a Mod- all of that is typical London. I try and draw from all of it. A very British thing about my style is that I like my clothes to be fitted, my trousers to be slim and my colours to be subtle.” Matthew’s must have is thus a Burberry pea coat in navy blue. He believes white t-shirts will never be out of fashion and that men should never wear bootcut denim.

The stylish Londoner ensures women to wear anything, as long as it is with confidence. Still he has some favourite pieces he likes to see in a woman’s wardrobe. “I like playsuits, racer back vests and high heels,” he reveals. Besides his style knowledge, working in the fashion industry has brought him some amazing fashion moments as well. “One of the most memorable moments was meeting John Galliano backstage at his menswear show in Paris. And bumping into Suzi Menkes as she came out of the toilet at Sonia Rykiel.” But it hasn’t been a fancy road to these glamorous moments. “I spent two years interning with no cash, working like a dog, being patronised, ignored and looked down on until I finally got a job. All for the love of fashion…”

After all his hard work he finally made it, but he still reserves admiration for his favourite person in the industry, Tim Blanks. “The man is at the top of his game and is very friendly, which is rare.” At the end of the day Matthew approaches fashion with a slice of humor and tries not to worry too much about how he dresses. And this humor also shines trough his favourite fashion quote, ‘you look like a gay burglar’, the description of a friend's style. So, is there anything more the boy who knows all things fashion can wish for? “I’d like to save all my clothes in case I have kids, and make sure my son gets to use them. If he wants them, that is.” Fingers crossed he won’t cut the sleeves of his vintage collection..

She is the newest face of Maybelline New York , international fashion magazines recognized her beauty by letting her appear on their pages and recently she glorified the cover of ELLE magazine (Mexico). But behind the pictures there is a woman with an intriguing fashion story, Lisalla Montenegro. Besides modelling and looking fabulous on camera, Lisalla has a passion for fashion and great sense of style off camera.

It all began in Goias, Brazil, where she grew up and got in touch with fashion at the age of four. “My mom used to work in a kids clothing store, called Cara de Anjo (“Face of an Angel”) and they decided to do a runway show. The owner of the store had met me before and asked my mom if I could walk in the show. She was thrilled, so I walked in it, and I remember that when I got in front of the cameras, I sent kisses to everyone who was watching me. I had no idea that my modelling career was going to start so early.” Growing up in Goias, Brazil not only had an impact on her future career, but affected her style choices as well and is still visible in her personal style today. “I live in dresses,” she reveals.

“Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happing.” – Coco Chanel. Today Lisalla resides in New York and living in the Big Apple makes her identify with the famous words by Coco Chanel. “This city is so vibrant and alive with people, seasons, colours, and emotions and I think this is very visible in people’s style choices. Living in New York has given me a new appreciation for style, and an outlet to express myself in the same way. My style changes everyday and is so dependant on where I am, where I am going, or how I am feeling.” Apart from dresses she likes to add skirts, blazers and shoes to her daily looks, along with her must-haves, her Prada bag, sunglasses and Diesel jeans. As a woman who takes pride in feeling sexy and confident, this Brazilian bombshell believes that stilettos will never be out of fashion!

For those of you who want to look as fabulous as Lisalla (who doesn’t?!) take note on her style and beauty tips! “When it comes to style be yourself, be creative, use colours and have fun with your clothes! Regarding to beauty, my number one secret is smile, always eat healthy, working out four to five times a week, get good rest and relax into your life!” This fashionista knew how to turn her passion into her career and is able to work with her favourite people in the industry, like designer Michael Angel. “I admire him a lot. He is so passionate about fashion and he is an incredible designer to work with. He always makes the best choices and not to mention a very funny guy!” It is many years ago that she worked the runway for the first time, but her most memorable fashion moment came when she walked the Hermes show in fashion capitol Paris.

Being a model has influenced Lisalla’s style in every aspect. Though it wasn’t long ago that she felt like a true fashionista. “Last year when I was at Barneys, getting new pieces for my closet. Saloni Lodha, the designer behind SALONI, showed her A/W 2011 collection during a presentation. This was set a The Savile Club in the heart of the posh Mayfair, which showed to be the perfect location for her glamourous and feminine collection. The presentation got a more romantic touch with pianist Rosey Chan playing during the showcase and an installation of Flamingos by artist Kelly McCallum on the background. While the guest could enjoy champagne and cupcakes the models walked by. The collection can be described as soft, feminine and wearable. With typical Autumn shades in it, like dark red, brown, grey and black. Don’t wait any longer and see the collection for yourself...

On 18 February, Irish designer Paul Costelloe opened London Fashion Week A/W 2011. He showed his Autumn/Winter 2011 collection with a catwalk show at The Somerset House. According to the designer, who is known for his tailoring, the colour-blocking trend will continue this coming A/W. The models were rocking this trend on the runway in different sort of pieces. From tailored coats to tights, all toped off with a cropped red bob line. It was all coloured…and that for a A/W season collection! Besides a lot of colour, the collection consisted of a lot of tweed. Which can be matched with the boyfriend, as he showed a few menswear pieces as well. So, it was a colourful start of London Fashion Week. Curious? See the collection here and be ready to look bright!

She is responsible for all things fashion at a leading magazine. But how did she fell in love with fashion herself? Meet Natalie Hartley, she is the Senior Fashion Editor of InStyle magazine UK. Besides her job at the magazine she is known for her unique style, which she likes to share with the world on her blog . Fashion was not far to seek while growing up, because of her family. “My dad was in textiles so I have been surrounded by fabrics and colour all my life,” she says. But her infatuation for fashion became a true love when she set the tone aged nine. “I was wearing stone washed denim dungarees, shorts with white tees with neon shapes and mirrors in the middle. The dungarees had a very 80s bib front!”

The fashionista has East European, German and Dutch roots, but she doesn’t believe that this particular roots has influenced her. It were the people in her surroundings in her youth and London as a city these days. The city is ‘visible’ in the way she dresses. “The ‘London’ in me is probably the slight grunge twist I put on everything. Even eveningwear, as I will style with a studded cuff or tougher heels, more masculine than feminine,” she explains. Natalie’s style can be described as laidback and comfortable but sexy. With a love for a great pair of jeans, which will never be out of fashion, according to the stylish lady. If there is one thing we can learn from her, it is from her style tip. “Don’t try too hard to dress for your shape, because it always looks cooler to appear effortless.”

Although she knows everything fashion, she still finds it hard to keep up with her fashion resolutions like all of us. For example to wear more colour than black. “I would probably choose black, because you think less about what to wear and always look classy and sexy. But I wish I would be bothered to wear more colour!” Working in the industry also brings a less pleasant side with itself. “My job in the fashion industry means you get bored very quickly with what is in fashion. And when my friends start wearing things I am six months ahead!”

Luckily her job brings a lot of good things. Because of her job Natalie first felt like a fashionista. “When I worked at ELLE magazine as a fashion assistant, which meant lots of amazing clothes, parties and travelling.” Besides the glamour she has the chance to work with amazing people as well, like shooting with photographer David Bailey. Fashion doesn’t feels like a job for the fashionista. That is why her fashion dream is that it stays as a hobby. “To me fashion is about expressing yourself in clothes and never judging others and being open to new things, whether you like them or would wear them, it is about the appreciation of nice things...”

The style platform Boutyq proved once again how innovative they are. Three Dutch and one British designer showed their Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 collection.

Francisco van Benthum showed his Francisco van Benthum/whitelabel collection for a/w 2011-2012. Masculinity, hard lines, proportions, black, grey and strong materials were at the heart of his collection.

The young designer Jan Boelo’s collection consisted of a lot of black, silver, rock chic, and a bit of edgy pieces.

Jeroen van Tuyl’s knitwear collection portrayed his eye for detail. Throughout his designs you can find images that resembles a broken glass; from a coat to a bag, and from the pants to even on the face of a model.

Philip Stephens, the genius behind Unconditional, was truly the icing on the cake of the evening. Great details and a very versatile collection is what you can expect for a/w 2011-2012.

My roots, My style! goes Amsterdam International Fashion Week...

Amsterdam International Fashion Week, what can I say? Aren't fashion weeks made to showcase what’s new? I am very disappointed by what I saw this season on the runway in Amsterdam. What I notice was the lack of 'industry' people (for example the huge giveaway of 100 tickets for Tony Cohen)...where do you want press and buyers to sit? I get the feeling that Amsterdam wants to be a part of that celebrities-sitting-front-row-culture instead of showing creative designs. All the pieces I saw on the catwalk were pieces that made you think: ‘Seen it all before, heard it all before'. Maybe because Amsterdam shows their Spring/Summer collection, while all the other International Fashion Weeks (London, Stockholm, Paris, Milan) are already one season ahead and showing their Autumn/Winter collection. Not to mention how they treated press. Having them wait outside in the cold for a long time and then, expect them to write nice articles on their clients, sorry not in my book!

And then I realised that this was the fourteenth edition (!) and it still seems like they don't know how to organise events like this. I guess this was a showcase of what I call fashion 2.0: people who want to be in fashion because of TV programme's like ANTM, project runway or becoming a celebrity in general. I call this behaviour a big FUSS...without any content. Amsterdam, what happened? And I am extremely annoyed by the word International in the title...or does that just showcase that all the real talent's next step will be internationally, like we’ve seen before, instead of Amsterdam based. Only time will tell...

Did you ever wonder what men would design when it comes down to intimates? Than take a look at Sam Friday! This new brand, launched today, is created by Maarten Uttien en his business partner Edwin Junge. Maarten has a strong feeling for aesthetics, which he claims to be the reason for his love of fashion. “I love design and can find beauty in everything that has to do with design,” says Maarten. “From furniture, buildings and cars to clothing.” He got exposed to fashion for the first time when he was in high school. Apart from that, his hometown, Haarlem, The Netherlands, played a huge role in creating his fashion sense. “I won the ‘best dressed’ title two times during high school, even tough I didn’t spend as much money on clothing as my classmates. I used to be a skater and snowboarder myself, so I wore lots of baggy clothing and skate shoes. This is still visible in my style today, but more mature complimented with a love for Scandinavian brands. Low-crotch jeans combined with a blazer for example,” he confesses.

So school, classmates and skating set the tone for what later would be creative director/owner of an intimates brand. But there was another factor in between: modelling. “I travelled the world as a model for various brands and magazines. Mainly to finance my studies, but it gave me a chance to get to know the industry better and a create my own vision of what fashion is.” After that he was the creative director of Barts where he designed winter accessories. Today he applies all this knowledge to Sam Friday. “I noticed that we didn’t have a young and foremost fashionable underwear brand in The Netherlands. So, I decided that this needed to change. A brand with a mixture of sexy and cute with a rough edge. A look I like for women in general.” And he adds. “Sam Friday doesn’t really have any rules, but there are a few things that women should know; do not opt for skin coloured bras, men hate them! And avoid the following: visible panty lines, visible bra lines, and too much push-up,” he tips.

When is comes to men’s fashion, Maarten believes that jeans and plain white t-shirts will never be out of fashion. And he likes to add a little bit of colour to his wardrobe. As much as he likes fashion, he doesn’t see himself as a ‘fashion victim’. “The main reason is that I don’t have the time to shop a lot. Luckily there is more and more available online, just like Sam Friday,” he says.

It started with skating, snowboarding and modelling and ended up with designing winter accessories and intimates. Maarten’s story shows how much his background played a role in creating his fashion sense. And to express his love for this industry even more he aims to extend Sam Friday into a huge intimate apparel chain.

Imagine you have one pair of heels and you can transform them in any style possible in just a second. Would you try it? I guess every woman would give it go! That’s why twenty-three year old entrepreneur Sandrysabel Ortiz from San Juan, Puerto Rico came up with the idea to design The Heel Condoms . “Women, especially “Latinas”, when we travel we like to pack practically all of our shoes. So I thought, if we can dress up, why not dress up our shoes?” Besides adding style to women worldwide with her creative designs, she has some style going on herself! Which she describes as 50s retro with a modern twist.

Sandrysabel fell in love with fashion at a young age and her mother and grandmother played the lead in that love story. “My mother has always been a fashion icon in my life, she is always dressed to impress. As for my grandmother, I’m obsessed with her old albums not only because she used to design and make most of her clothes to fit her style but I also feel very identified with 50s and 60s fashion trends,” says the fashionista. Today she can identify with other Puerto Rican ladies when it comes to accessorizing her accessories, which is a typical fashion habit in Puerto Rico. But it goes a little too far when the ladies combine their purse with their shoes. “That is a huge “don’t” for me,” she says.

Working in the fashion industry has influenced Sandrysabel’s style as well. “Every event I go to or every person I meet in the field adds value to my style,” she explains. It is not weird that she designs shoe accessories. She chooses shoes above clothing and accessories, they are her must-have (nude coloured pumps) and the subject of her favourite fashion quote, “Your shoes tell me everything about you”! However shoes are not all she could think of in the world of fashion. She believes that pearls and shoulder pads are items that will never be out of fashion. And she likes to share her fashion lessons with the rest of the world. “Always leave something to the imagination. If you have a short dress, cover your cleavage and arms. One thing at a time! That is the key to looking sexy, yet classy.”

Sandrysabel was raised Catholic, which also playes a part in the way she dresses. “Being Catholic is pretty liberal, although when in church I always dress more conservatively in respect of why I’m there for,” she confides. Although the stylish lady fell in love with fashion at a young age. It wasn’t long ago that she realised that fashion was her calling. “When I quit my job in the finance field to pursue starting a business with an innovative product for the fashion industry I felt like a real fashionista.” She aims to make The Heel Condoms a necessary addition to every woman’s closet. No doubt she is on her way! Because for the love of fashion she made it easy, fun and affordable for women to update the heels they already have. What more can we ask for, girls...

Last Friday the Church of The Hague was dominated by Dutch fashion. The Dutch Fashion Foundation organised the fourth edition of the Dutch Fashion Awards. Five designers, who all portray Dutch creativity in their own way, competed against each other to win twenty five thousand euros. Iris van Herpen was the lucky girl!

During Amsterdam International Fashion Week 2010 Van Herpen already showed that she is a genius! It was not a surprise that she also won two other awards. Her collection shows her creativity, technical capability and her own signature. It was a very beautiful night to realise how important it is to celebrate Dutch fashion. Another part of the prize named above is the possibility for Van Herpen to show her collection next year during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Berlin. By this opportunity the organisation aims to give Van Herpen an international stage. Because that is what it’s all about at the end of the day...Dutch designers as a part of the international fashion market!

We are all familiar with the red carpet. From ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the celebs in their couture clothing to getting some style inspiration. But have you ever realised that there is a whole industry behind this phenomenon? During the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven I attended a fashion seminar that was based on this concept: The Red Carpet vs Addy van den Krommenacker, organised by The Krabbedans and the Eindhoven library. And I spoke the Dutch couturier on his vision on the red carpet.

This year The Krabbedans and the Eindhoven library hosted a fashion seminar for the second time during the Dutch Design Week. “For this seminar we first decided on who we wanted to invite and based the whole theme of the seminar around that person,” explains Esther Bennenbroek, Portfolio manager of the Eindhoven library. It is no coincidence that the theme was the red carpet, because Addy van den Krommenacker is known for his to-die-for dresses that appear frequently on the red carpet. The couturier has worked his magic’s for the likes of many Dutch celebs and even beyond borders. You might have seen him on America’s Next Top Model cycle eleven, where the models (and Tyra) were dressed is his creations. But it’s not just an overnight interest for the couturier. “Ever since I was a little boy I was intrigued by long dresses. Instead of playing outside, I sat at the dinner table drawing princesses in dresses,” says Van den Krommenacker.

A part of the seminar was the exhibition ‘Modebelofte 2010’ where fashion students from academies around the country showed their work. It is important for the Krabbedans to encourage regional talent, even if their talent has brought them beyond the region. And that they still come back to be a role model for the local community. That is why it was an honour to welcome Addy van den Krommenacker, who has his roots in the region. “My environment did not really influence my designs. Besides red carpets, the fifties, movie stars and women who walked on long stairs in evening gowns, inspired me. My influences are worldwide,” admits the couturier. However he still lives and works in the region.

The documentary The Red Carpet by Olivier Nicklaus showed the industry behind it all. Commented by people in the industry from Marc Jacobs to Elle’s Joe Zee. Addy van den Krommenacker believes that the red carpet is a way for designers to get their name out there. “It is another factor of the whole industry and a good way to get press coverage. It is also a way to get more attention for evening gowns in contrast on what we normally see on the catwalk. I believe that today the red carpet is a ‘business card’ for designers,” he says.

What I like about initiatives like these is that they make fashion accessible for everyone and they approach it from another perspective. “By organising fashion seminars like this we aim to attract a lot of fashion lovers, but we want to give it more content. That is achieved by the documentary, which has a critical note on it,” says Esther Bennenbroek. So, we are more aware of the phenomenon now. And according to Van den Krommenacker this is a good thing. “I believe the red carpet also gave Dutch women more glamour.” The couturier showed that it is possible to go from a little boy who dreamed about red carpets to a couturier whose designs are shown on the red carpet. Is there anything more he can wish for? “One day I hope to create a dress for our crown princess Maxima, but for now it is amazing that people want to wear my designs and by that being a part of that phenomenon...the red carpet.”

L.A. girls are known for their glamorous look. If there is one girl who always caught anyone’s attention with her consistently head-to-toe chic look, it must be Lo Bosworth. The twenty-four year old fashionista is best known as a cast member on the hit TV show ‘The Hills’. Being a star on the show she has been a huge style influence for many young girls and women around the globe. So, how did the girl who inspired so many others with her style got galvanized by the voice of fashion? “It all started when I saw Madonna.” But also her environment played a role in creating her fashion sense, even today. “I grew up at the beach and my style will forever be a combination of classic lines and comfy pieces,” says Lo.

Lo lives her stylish life in Los Angeles, United States. And she can find a lot of that typical L.A. look in her wardrobe. “Lots of jewellery, sunglasses and purses makes my style very L.A.” On a bigger scale she can identify with the all-American look as well. “That must be visible in my blue jeans, of course,” she says. Although she lives in sunny California, she chooses black over colour clothing. “I don’t think black will ever be out of fashion,” says the fashionista. She keeps her look fresh with her beauty secret, which is a lot of water and sunscreen. And gives that extra boots with her must-have, which is her black Balenciaga bag. All these factors make her style unique and a unique style is what she likes to see. “Wear what you want, not what anyone else dictates,” she teaches the world.

Fashion will always be a part of Lo her life. At the moment she is working on her website The Lo Down where fashion is mentioned very often. In January 2011 her new book with the same title will come out. From the girl who got inspired by Madonna, to a fashion icon. The girl has accomplished a lot and is still on the rise. Meet Zarna! She is a twenty-three year old Musician, Entertainment Publicist and Stylist from Nashville, United States. She caught my eye by the way her background is visible in her style. “I’m an first generation Indian-American and I love my culture. I am constantly wearing Indian scarves and jewellery with my American clothes. I also love dressing up in Indian clothing!” she explains. It is not a coincidence that she fell in love with fashion, because her grandmother exposed her to it on a young age. “My dad’s mother was probably my biggest style influence. She used to dress beautifully every day. She always wore a sari, with matching jewellery and even matching socks! Her style was slightly over the top – just like mine!”

Zarna her fashion sense is not influenced by the typical style of the city she lives nor by the country she resides. “My style has always been about what I like and feel like wearing. I don’t necessarily follow trends or ideas of how I should dress. I just wear what I like and if it happens to be in style then so be it,” she says. And that is exactly what she wants to teach the rest of the world when it comes to fashion. “Never leave the house feeling uncomfortable. Just because a magazine says you have to dress a certain way doesn’t mean you have to! Make sure you feel great in what you’re wearing and it will definitely show,” she tips. This fashionista her personal style can best be described as eclectic, because she loves to mix it up! From head to toe vintage or rocker chic one day, to prim and proper the other day. She loves it all. It really just depends on her mood! But six-inch stilettos, a leather jacket, and Ray-Ban’s are her true fashion essentials!

Although her essentials are the items named above, her most memorable fashion moment had to do with her Indian background. “It was when I was wearing my first sari at age eighteen! It’s a coming of age moment in the Indian community.” But long before that moment she knew that her future was going to be in fashion. “When I wore a red jumper to my sixth birthday party. I was way ahead of the trends and felt like a true fashionista!” says Zarna. The fabulous lady believes in eternal style. A tailored black blazer will never be out of fashion in her eyes.

Fashion is a way to express her self to Zarna. That’s the reason her favourite person in the fashion industry is Anna Dello Russo. “I love how she’s so daring and always wears the most fabulous pieces!” With her inspiration in mind Zarna lives her fashionable life and does what she’s doing best to declare her love to fashion. “I Love to blog and be a stylist...”

Cameron - Los Angeles, United States

“Fashion is an experience, and should be treated as such. More often than not, when I get dressed, I intend to make a statement.” These words are by twenty-four year old Cameron from Los Angeles, Unites States. She currently works as a Casting Assistant and Fashion Photographer. Her style can be described as ‘bouncing around’ inspired by her mother, her sister, Los Angeles and Buddhism. “My mother is by far the most fashionable person I know, with an incredible eye, and impeccable taste. Every morning when I was very young, I would always look forward to the outfits she would carefully lay on my bed as I took a shower in the morning. She would lay out everything from the belt, to the socks, to the underwear. She was always very particular about accessories.” Her sister knew how to caught her attention as well. “On one of our family trips to NYC, my sister picked up a bunch of clothes from Spike Lee’s Brooklyn store, “Spike’s Joint”, and then began my love affair with cross colours. Because I always loved to perform, my sister used to style me and her, teach us dance moves, and we would perform for her friends. The 1980’s was such a magical time for fashion, and I’m very lucky to have been so exposed to it through my sister’s own unique style,” says the fashionista.

The city she lives in, Los Angeles, also plays a role in her fashion sense today. “Los Angeles is the epitome of comfort and uniqueness. It cradles and nurtures everyone’s style and their own individual voice. It’s a place where anything goes, which I love. I would say my spontaneity, inclination to try different trends, experiment with and include different colours and designs in outfits, is very typical of Los Angeles. The city has such an amazing diversity, and I’m a product of that environment.” Nevertheless she thinks that the US can be really safe and boring when it comes to fashion. Thanks to her travel experiences she broadened her horizon and she is able to reflect that in her style. Another factor in Cameron’s style is her devotion to Buddhism. “Buddhism has introduced me to a freedom I’ve never felt, and that translate to the things I wear. I’m much more courageous about the clothes I put on. The crazier, the sexier, the better.”

This crazy/sexy style is translated in high-waisted jeans, cropped shirts, red lipstick, high heels and Jumpsuits, which will never be out of fashion in Cameron’s eyes. Just like many looks from the fifties and sixties “I find myself getting lost in the clothes of the 1950’s and 60’s. My style is sexy, sophisticated, bold, chic, edgy and adventurous,” says the fierce girl. Who often takes a peek at the collections of her favourite American designers Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang.

Cameron first felt like a fashionista when clothes, shopping and fashion magazines started to take up most of her free time. Today her love for fashion goes further than that. She aspires to be a fashion photographer, she is on her way, and travel the world more often. Inspired by her favourite person in the industry, The Sartorialist. “Because I truly believe that Street fashion on a global scale is the future.” It’s obvious that to Cameron fashion is so much more than clothes. What does public transport, a neighbourhood in Cape Town and religion have in common? They all influenced the style of twenty-six year old Ronel from Cape Town, South Africa. These days Ronel is a busy fashion entrepreneur and Masters Student. Fashion has always been her true love. “I remember my moment came about when my dad brought me a Rick Astley bomber jacket in black and beige and a skirt. I used to wear it with stockings and converse sneakers! I was super cool, and no one had swagger like me in that outfit at the age of nine,” she says. These days she still goes for the comfortable and urban style. “I use public transport so I need to be comfortable.” All inspired by her environment. “My community is very stylish regardless of the fact that I live in a low to no-income neighbourhood! In my neighbourhood, labels and fashion brands had always been important. For me, however, labels and brands had never been part of my fashion focus, partly because I could never afford to keep up with those trends financially and also both my parents are in the fashion industry and have always custom-made my clothes for me.”

Ronel considers her style as typical Capetonian, because it is as laid back as the city itself. There is another factor that played a role in creating her fashion sense, religion. “Religion used to play a huge role in my dress code, as young girls we weren’t allowed pants, tights, or any revealing type clothes. Especially going to church we had to wear dresses. My style has changed and even though I am still very respectful, I am also wearing what makes me comfortable,” she confirms. To keep her look edgy and street she invests in her must haves, which are sneakers and heels.

“Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style”-John Fairchild. Ronel can identify with this quote, because she mixed individualism and style since back in the day. “All the kids at my primary and high school will wait for me at the school gate to arrive to see what I was wearing. That’s when I realised I’m a true fashionista,” says Ronel. But fashion means more to Ronel than just wearing clothes. “Two friends and I started an initiative in Cape Town, Design for Style, where we give a platform to emerging designers to showcase their creations to an audience of industry people and the media, to elevate the young designers into the fashion world.” Her favourite woman in the industry, Noni Gasa, inspires Ronel. Noni Gasa is a television presenter, actress, fashion editor and the face of Africa Fashion Week. “I love Miss Noni because she is not just a beautiful woman who carries herself with such grace; she is also a business woman, very approachable and very keen to help emerging entrepreneurs to the fashion industry,” says Ronel.

Ronel used to be an inspiration for the kids at the school gate. And now she gives emerging talent a chance. What does fashion means in the life of this insightful fashion lover? “To me, fashion is an outside manifestation of inner a strong inner sense of self...”

I’m in love! The lucky one is the Spring/Summer 2011 collection of Claes Iversen. Yesterday I attend the show of the Danish/Dutch designer at the Felix Meritis in Amsterdam. First of all I was amazed by the beautiful location, which use to be the house of an association of the same name as the building in the 18th century for the bourgeoisie of Amsterdam. The beautiful location accentuated the feminine touch of the collection even more. According to Claes we will be rocking a lot of pastel colours, soft fabrics, lace and feathers during SS2011. In the form of dresses, high wasted skirts, coats and shorts. I’m already counting the days until next Spring...

From a small town boy to a model who has Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, GQ Italy and many more on his portfolio. Twenty-one year old Chiel from ‘s Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands still finds it hard to believe that this is his life at the moment. “I used to be very shy, but people always came up to me and encouraged me to pursuit modelling.” Even though he wasn’t sure about a modelling career he knew that he was interested in fashion from a young age. “I remember when I was thirteen or fourteen years old. I saw a watch from Dolce & Gabbana and immediately knew that it needed to be mine. So I worked for the rest of the summer at a three nursery. Just to save up for my watch! Something totally different,” he laughs.

Chiel created his interest in fashion by himself. “My environment is not really into fashion. I also grew up in a very small town, so people around me were not that fashionable,” he says. He finds it hard to identify with Dutch style. “Dutch people rather go for comfortable and simple clothes than try a little harder to look good.” He can identify more with Italian men who know how to pull it off! “My personal style can be described as fashionable, but still masculine and close to my personality.” To update his style Chiel likes to go shopping for new items and sample sales. His must have is a good jacket. “I got all sorts of jackets and I love to switch them. Every other week I have another favourite.” Even tough he has some good taste, he ensures me not to be this haughty man who looks at his self in the mirror all day.

So boys if you want to be as stylish as this pretty boy, than take note on his style picks! He goes for comfortable instead of dressed up, but with style! Chooses shoes over sneakers and colour over black. “I really like coloured shirts instead of black.” He likes to see women as natural as possible. “Women should not wear too much make-up and I love a lady in heels. Dutch women are too shy when it comes to heels. They wear like three of four cm heels. This may be a lot higher if you ask me,” says Chiel. If Chiel could change something in the world of fashion than his tip is to focus less on crash diets and be healthy instead, he advice women not to wear wool tights anymore and he hopes that there will be a designer who comes with wearable shoes to work out!

His most memorable moment in fashion is when he got ‘the call’ from Calvin Klein. “I can’t describe how it felt to be a part of the 9 countries 9 men campaign. I had to fly immediately to London! From there I went to Europe’s fashion capitals for shoots (like Madrid, Milan, Paris and Stockholm). The campaign was a positive jump in my career and opened many doors,” he explains. If there is one thing I notice from Chiel, it is how humble he is. He still works for Dutch designer Addy van den Krommenacker besides modelling! “I really like modelling, but I like to use my head and do something with my degrees in retail management, small business and financial planning.” From PR and show production to starring in front of the camera, the boy does it all!

So, what can we expect from the boy with a bright future in fashion? “I just enjoy my life as it is right now, I am very pleased. I try to work for Addy a few days and doing shoots abroad the other days. We’ll see how it goes,” he says. Humble as he is...

If you had barbies who where fashion-forward, than you knew your future would be in fashion! Twenty-year-old Tala knows how to dress from a very young age. “When I was really young, I used to assist my grandma whilst she designed and sewed my barbies outfits - I always had the coolest outfits that Mattel never made!” She had the luck to live in a fashionable house. “My mom is a fashion-lover, I grew up being aware of fashion - my grandma is too... I'm pretty lucky, the vintage items get passed down to me,” she says.

There are more things that inspired Tala’s style, like her cultural background. “I was born in the US, originally Syrian, grown up in Dubai and currently live in London - I travel quite a bit so I get my inspirations that way.” This is all reflected in here style, which she perfectly describes as eclectic. “I'm rock chic one day, and bohemian the next day - it really all depends on my mood, but I'm drawn into looks and pieces from the 70s.” At the moment she lives in London. And that is not visible in what she wears, but how she wears it. Since attitude towards clothing plays a huge role to Londoners. “I've got my own style - I love playing around and having fun with different looks which is very 'London',” she says.

You must be curious on her fashion picks for the next season. Tala goes for a shearling jacket for the coming fall. And her all-time favourite is the perfect LBD. “It has to be perfect for day, night, when I'm twenty and when I'm fifty.” The most important message is in her style secret, which she likes to share with us. “Have fun with fashion and dress for yourself.” It’s obvious that the girl knows fashion! But she is very humble; she still finds it odd to call herself a fashionista. However she has many fashion dreams to fulfil. “I'm ambitious, and have lots of fashion dreams so keep your eyes on my blog,” she says.

She admires the ambitious women in the industry, like Net-a-porter's Natalie Massenet and Stylist, Rachel Zoe. “They both are very inspiring. They had visions and built their empires themselves.” So with her fashionable background and admiration for these ladies I truly believe we will hear Tala’s name in the future. She is definitely on her way. “I have been blogging for nearly a year, study at the London College of Fashion, freelance for publications, interned at Tom Ford and Grazia Magazine. Why? To declare my love to fashion...”

Louise Roe - Los Angeles, United States

If you look for the word fashionista in the dictionary you will find a description of Louise Roe. This fashion journalist certainly knows how to rock some style! Fashion is not just an overnight interest. Louise knew how to be stylish at a very young age. “I was wearing a pink puffball skirt and pink fishnet tights to my sister’s 10th birthday party. I was five years old and thought I was rocking it!” In those early years the people around her were not really into fashion. So Louise her fashion sense was not really influenced by others, but this changed by the years. “My mum isn’t really into shopping, but by the time I went to university the friends around me certainly loved a copy of Vogue,” she explains.

This super-fashionista was born and raised in the UK, but nowadays lives in Los Angeles. These two cities have their own unique styles, like the British eccentricity and the sunny glam look of LA. Louise knows how to do both of them! “LA is visible in my love of colour, and little dresses. In London I can dress a little more edgy though and not worry that people might think I’m weird!” She describes her style as 1970s influenced. So it is not a coincidence that her must have is a pair of very high heels, since this was the era of the platform shoes. And if you want to look as style-full as Louise, invest in a crisp white shirt, because she believes they will never be out of fashion.

“Fashion fades, style is eternal” the famous words by Yves Saint Laurent. A lot of fashionistas can identify themselves with these words. It is not a surprise that the stylish Louise can relate to these words as well. But fashion means so much more than just clothes to her. “Fashion is a way to express your mood, add confidence and have fun,” she says.

Even though Louise knew how to rock it ever since back in the day. It is only since a few years she feels like a true fashionista. “It was when I walked into the offices at ELLE to start my internship, a week after graduating.” Her love for fashion has brought her a lot more. Today she writes a column for MSN called ’Front Roe’, which covers the shows and host a makeover programme each week called ‘Plain Jane’. You might have seen her on MTV’s ‘The City’ or reporting for ELLE.com. So can a girl with a dream job have any more to wish for? “I would love to design my own line of cocktail dresses one day...”

Cindy - Antwerp, Belgium

Antwerp is known to be a good shopping city. So, when I saw seventeen-year-old model and blogger, Cindy from Antwerp, Belgium I was curious how her Belgian roots influenced her fashion sense today. Unlike a lot of other women her environment does not influenced Cindy. “I can not really say that my style is typical Belgium. I buy a lot at Jutka & Riska, a vintage shop in Antwerp. Other than that fashion is general in Belgium. It was two years ago when she won a restyling with Ann Van Elsen (Miss Belgium 2002). “She showed me what fashion really is about,” she says.

She describes her style as classic with a twist. “For example classic pants with special heels or top as eye catcher!” So style is what counts for this fashionista! That is also visible in her favourite fashion quote: “Fashion fades, Style is eternal” by Yves Saint Laurent. She believes that a blazer and skinny jeans will be in fashion for eternity. “The great thing about blazers and jeans is that you can combine them with everything.” Her must have for this season are clogs. “I absolutely adore Karl Lagerfeld. He is my favourite person in the industry. He is the one who got everyone on clogs this season! Unfortunately my feet are too small so I still didn’t find the perfect pair yet.”

Cindy first felt like a true fashionista when she started searching for inspiration. Today she has an inspirational blog herself. She still has dreams. “I would love to attend fashion shows and showrooms,” she says. As of now she likes to share her outfits with the rest of the world. “To me fashion is something you share with the whole world, every single day...”

Toni - Brussels, Belgium

Imagine that you have lived in the best fashion places in the world, like Paris and in the UK than you must be fashionable! Even tough twenty-five year old student Politics and European external affairs, Toni doesn’t see herself as a fashionista, she definitely has some style! And it started many years ago. “My earliest fashion memory would be of my mum getting ready for parties. She had a very unique, colourful and eclectic sense of style, and I loved it! I would sit on the bed and watch her get ready.” Like I believe that cities play a role in the way people dress, so does Toni. “I think everyone is influenced in one way or another by the environment that they live in, how can we not. As I said earlier my mother would have to be my main source of influence but there are so many other things such as the country I was brought up in and the schools I went to (for years influenced my preppy style as uniforms were obligatory) who also had some sort of influence on my style. The places I have lived in, such as Paris and the UK also played a small yet important role in the way I dress today,” she says.

At the moment Toni resides in Brussels, Belgium. A lot of characteristics of that city are already visible in her personal style. “Brussels is one of those cities that is void of any specific style, it is not Parisian chic or New York cool and fresh and neither is it London urban. I see it as very laid back and never following trends, as they always seem to arrive two decades later in Belgium. The fact that Belgium is never really in the loop when it comes to fashion certainly influenced my laid back take on fashion and clothes.” And that translates in the way she dresses. “My style is laid back, comfortable with a small element of “surprise”. I would say I am a girlie version of a tomboy,” she explains.

When it comes to her fashion must haves she is very humble, but stylish as well. She chooses a lot of ladylike classics. “Black opaque tights, a very high pair of heels, a pair of converse shoes and a great pair of jeans are my basics.” Even tough her biggest influence, her mother, had a colourful style she chooses a lot of black. “I would love to say colour but I am more of a black wearer. I think this has to do with the fact that I have bright red hair. I often play around with neutral colours but this doesn’t means that I shy completely away from colours all together.” And she believes that a crisp white shirt will never be out of fashion.

Dries van Noten and Diane von Furstenberg are Toni’s favourite Belgian designers. “Diane Von Furstenberg is pretty amazing, the silhouettes she creates are incredible and her last two collections have left me amazed with the way she plays with patterns and colours.” We all have people in the industry who amaze us and got us speechless. Besides these two Belgian icons Toni gets speechless by the amazing style of Christine Centenera.

Like her laid back and humble style is her look on fashion. “To me fashion is a lucrative and fascinating industry (but nevertheless first and foremost an industry). Clothes on the other hand are a whole different story. They can express someone’s personality just as well as they can hide someone behind a facade of clothes. Thus for me fashion is fascinating and very confusing. That is the reason why I probably spend way too much time and money trying to understand and comprehend it. All for the love of fashion..."

It’s hard to say goodbye to Amsterdam International Fashion Week. It was an amazing, but very tiring week! I met amazingly talented people, like Stacey from iwritefashion Fashion Photographer Vincent Kos, Precilla from FashionArtExpression and Fashion lover Leila! It was good to be around so many passionate people in general. It kinda felt like a summer camp for fashion lovers. A classic label, with a modern twist. Sandwich was launched in 1981, but it was their first show at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week. The models where smeyezing (Tyra Banks word for smiling with the eyes) on the runway, while they showed the collection for spring/summer 2011. The collection has a few themes and they were definitely visible on the runway. Ocean Breeze, Raw Chic and Be Spontaneous are just a few of them. It was an easy to wear collection and it made me think of Scandinavian fashion, because it has a lot of earth colours and natural fabrics. But I think this is the perfect collection for the Dutch woman, because Dutch women aren't very glamorous and very down to earth. And...they had one of the best goodie bags of the week, including a beautiful Sandwich bracelet! So I got my first piece of the collection in my wardrobe and I am sure there will be more...

If you have eye for detail, than you will understand the collection of NÕN by Kim. Designer Kim Bakker called her menswear spring/summer 2011 collection Uncontacted. The reason for this name is that her collection is inspired by uncontacted people, like lost tribes. She uses a lot of organic and recycled cottons, sand and indigo colours and geometric prints. The accessories indicated the subject and her inspiration as well. So her mission is completed! The show definitely took me back in the atmosphere and the environment of lost tribes.

Every now and then there is a next best thing in the world of fashion. It is because of initiatives like the Frans Molenaar Prize, which means support from Dutch Couturier Frans Molenaar and 10.000 euros to develop as a designer, that we can discover these talented people a little sooner. During the Amsterdam International Fashion Week it was time for the panel of judges to catch some new couture talent. Every designer had the chance to show the panel where they are made off by showing five pieces. For this year Fred Farrow is the one who has won the jackpot in couture land! The other nominees where: Denise Esser, Ratna Ho, Tishya Oedit and Marie Burlot. They were lucky enough to play in the spotlight at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week.

Don’t you think that fashion can be a guilty pleasure sometimes? Well not anymore! At the Amsterdam International Fashion Week THE RED RAIL launched a collection by eighteen young designers. The good thing about this project is that the only way to acquire clothes is by giving blood. Yes, blood! And let me tell you I’m in love with the collection, which showed a lot of pastel coloured, shaped and flattering pieces. The details of the pieces shows the subject, like jeans with braces made of intravenous lines and a dress and handbag that shows a blank donor card. During the catwalk show, which I could see from my first frontrow seat, you could hear the story of a young lady who needed blood to survive. While the catwalk had a red laser line to get your attention. THE RED RAIL shows that fashion can be more than expenses. That’s a bloody good idea...isn’t it?

If there is one Dutch fashion event that I absolutely love, it must be Boutyq! I was lucky to attend the third edition of this progressive initiative yesterday. For this edition they invited the Dutch designer Francisco van Benthum (menswear) and the British designer Adam Entwisle (women’s wear). The show was even more spectacular with the presence of Dutch model Marvy Rieder and Peaches Geldof, who presented the show.

Francisco van Benthum showed soft and artistic but wearable pieces. The fabrics had a feminine touch, but the pieces were very masculine at the same time. Shape is the word to describe the collection of Adam Entwisle. He showed a lot of asymmetric, printed and puffed pieces.

I can't wait to see who will be the next designer that this platform will showcase to the Dutch fashion industry. But I am sure it will be great and inspirational!

Some of you might know her as Bambi from the TV hit Secret Diary of A Call Girl, but twenty-six-year old actress Ashley is also a passionate blogger and fashionista to the fullest. She created her love for fashion at a young age. “My earliest fashion memory is dressing up in my mother’s clothes. She had a sequined boob tube that I loved… I thought it was the perfect skirt! Later when I was old enough I wore it the right way.” But there where more people who played a role in creating her sense of style. “I had a teacher that wore lots of silver rings and I was always fascinated by them. My mother also wore a lot of rings. I tend to wear at least five rings on a day-to-day basis. The more the merrier,” she says.

Even today there are fashionable signs of her youth visible in the way she dresses. “I grew up in a very urban area and sneakers were all we cared about. Even now I can’t walk past a sneaker store without going inside.” The fact that she lives in London can also be seen in the accessories she carries with her. “I always carry an umbrella, typical London!” When she lived in always-sunny-Los Angeles it was different. “I was influenced by my time in Los Angeles. The stylish girls there are really good at pulling together easy luxe looks,” says Ashley.

Fashion also has to do with your personality. “When it comes to fashion I am very uncommitted. I never stick to one look. I get bored to easily! For example, I don’t have any must-haves, they depend on my mood.” That is the reason why it’s hard to define Ashley’s personal style. But fabulous it is! Even though must-haves depend on this fashionista her mood. There are some things she believes will never be out of fashion. “It is more about a feeling. I guess it is whatever makes you feel good. It’s always stylish to feel good in your clothes,” says the fashionista.

She lives in the country of many great designers she loves, from Vivienne Westwood to PPQ. Still it was in another city she first felt like a true fashionista. “When I sat on my first front row during New York Fashion Week I got that feeling.” And as a true fashion lover every now and then she discovers some good British fashion secrets. “I just discovered a line called Aqua. They do dresses.”

Ashley declares her love to fashion by writing on her blog and spend a huge portion of the day reading all the other fashion blogs. When it comes to fashion dreams can you have more dreams after sitting front row at New York Fashion Week? A little. “I dream only of more shoes.” That’s just the fun of fashion, because that is what it’s all about for Ashley at the end of the day, just like the way it started.

Last Saturday I was invited by Josh V. to attend the Music and Fashion Battle that she had to present (she did great!). MAFB is a platform for young creative people in Amsterdam. I love initiatives like these, because they stimulate young people to fulfil their dreams. That is why I want to share this with my readers.

MAFB organises these battles in different districts in Amsterdam. The city centre district was the district to represent their fashion designers and models in the public library of Amsterdam this Saturday. Five designers showed their creations during five catwalk shows. At the end a panel of judges, who are very great and well-known people in the Dutch fashion industry, choose the winner. Anbasja Design, who designed really great conceptual pieces, is the winner of this edition. Check out these great photos shot by Monquichot by Marques Malacia.

Some women are born to do fashion! Like twenty-three-year old Josh from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She lives her fashionable life as a model, presenter, writer, pr-manager and designer. Her love for fashion has always been there. “I’ve always been very fashion forward. I put together dresses with staples and remnants and gave a fashion show in my living room for my family when I was about nine years old.” She knew the right place to go for inspiration as well. “I was mainly inspired by fashion magazines and my favourite style-icons when I was younger, not so much by my environment,” says Josh.

Even tough her environment did not really influenced he style, she has some typical Amsterdam about her style. “I think that people in Amsterdam know very well how to express themselves through fashion. We’re not afraid to wear anything and we are very outgoing. All the girls wear high heels for instance. On the other hand I think my style is more New York than Amsterdam, even though I always wear the most impossible high heels. Only a few fashionista’s in New York do this, but they do it very well, like Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung. I love their styles!” Her personal style can be described as casual chic. “I wear a lot of different styles, but it’s almost never just casual. For instance, I only wear flat shoes when I walk my dog or when I work out! And I’m not even joking…” As a model, she carries off her unique fashion look elegantly, from a colourless wardrobe and colourful nail polish to huge and bulky necklaces. She makes it work!

Many years has past since Josh walked fashion shows for just family. “When I was seventeen I walked my first runway-show. That is when I first felt like a fashionista.” Later on she became the muse of her favourite Dutch designer, DJANGO, who is also her favourite person in the industry. “Not only is he the best designer, he’s also my soul mate and best friend.” Josh is very ambitious and has many more fashion dreams to fulfil. “This year I’m launching my own fashion and jewellery-line ‘Josh V’. I want to make it tremendously popular, wanted and loved by women all over the world,” she says.

Fashion plays a huge role in Josh her life; it is a way to express herself. “To me fashion is like creating art. Fashion can be so much fun, I truly love it! Playing around with new looks, shopping, designing. Fashion is a way of life to me!” That is why she does a lot for fashion. “For the love of fashion I travel the world for inspiration and to expand my network. I’ve been modelling since I was seventeen years old, started writing about it last year and started designing this year, so I’ve been in fashion for a long time and hope to be working in fashion for the rest of my life.”

Michelle - Munich, Germany

Michelle, a fashion lover to the fullest, lives in Munich, Germany. If you ask her about German beauty and style secrets she answers “ Dirndl, Lederhosn and beer,” which are traditional costumes from Southern Germany. But there is a lot more modern about this fashionista! Thanks to her mother and a friend who played a role in creating her fashion sense. “It started with my mum who always took me shopping. She tried to make it possible for me to be fashionable and to wear what I want to. A few years ago I found my “own” style, but there was still a friend who told me what to wear and what not. She kind of did the final touch!”

She is not sure if there is a typical German style, but it is a fact that they are fashion forward! “The Germans aren’t very bold in fashion and I think this is kind of rubbed off on me,” she says. This season Michelle hopes to add plateau wedges and floral to her wardrobe to create a hippie look. “I like colour a lot in spring or summer. But I must confess. I’d rather wear black or “dark” colours at night.” I guess she is not the first fashionista who has to admit that...

Karl Lagerfeld once said: “Fehler im Aussehen entstehen, weil viele das tragen, was sie meinen tragen zu müssen, und nicht das, was sie tragen möchten.’’ Which means that a lot of people wear what they think they should wear, instead of what they should wear. Michelle agrees with the famous German designer. However there are things that practically anyone can wear and therefore always will be around.“ I believe that the little black dress and jeans will never be out of fashion.’’

Michelle always loved fashion, but since last year she feels like a ‘real’ fashionista. “When I woke up really early to get some pieces out of the Jimmy Choo for H&M collection, I felt like a totally crazy fashionista.” When it comes to achieving her dreams she is on her way by waking up early for shoes. “My biggest fashion dream would be a really big blog and Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe cabinet,” says Michelle.

It is obvious that fashion is very present in this fashionista her life, but it is more than that. “Fashion is to wear whatever you feel like wearing and whatever suits you. To declare my love for fashion I have a little fashion blog where I post my daily outfits and impressions”.

We all know there is something magical about fashion. Denni, a twenty-one-year old student, stylist and fashion blogger from Paris, France realised that very early. “I remember my mom was getting ready to go to a party, she was wearing a great long red dress with an amazing necklace, in that moment I knew there was something more, magical, and I needed to know what it was.” That moment has become a big influence on how she looks today. “I remember my mom’s red lips all the time and now this has become one signature of my style.” she says.

So red lips is one signature when it comes to her style, but black skinny jeans and white sheer blouses are added to the list as well. And so does a little typical Parisian style. “I add a glow of glamour to my daily outfits, I think every French woman is great to feel like that. The importance of the image in Paris goes well with fashion trends or just with the fact of feeling elegant.”

“Les modes passent, le style est eternal” a famous quote of Denni’s favourite French designer Yves Saint Laurent about the fact that fashion fades and that style is eternal. When it comes to style, confidence is important to, so believes Denni in her style tip to the world. “Never wear something you aren’t confident to use.” says Denni.

Fashion means alot to this fashionista. “To me fashion is new, fresh, attractive and some times luxury.” She really felt like a fashionista when she started to wear red lipstick. After loving fashion for so long she is still inspired by her favourites in the industry. “Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Dello Russo, and of course Emmanuelle and Carine Roitfeld. All of them have a totally different essence and personality, but each one is special for the way they do the fashion things to work.”

For the love of fashion she is a stylist, fashion blogger, model and preparing herself to become someone influential in the fashion industry. “But at the moment I am living my dream by being the owner of the Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

If there is someone who can combine religious holidays with fashion, it must be Gamze. She is a twenty-two-year old student and styling assistant from Istanbul, Turkey. “My earliest fashion memories are all about religious holidays when we wore new clothes and visited family members and friends. For these days my mom bought the most beautiful clothes for my sister and me. We used to shop all day long and she made us try everything in order to find the perfect outfit.” Although these holidays introduced her to fashion, she is not totally influenced by it. “My environment didn’t affect my style, but I picked some clothes from my mom and sister’s closet and combine them with my clothes.”

When she thinks of typical Istanbul style she thinks of grunge or boho chic. “Because it is all about mixture! Mixture of culture, history, elegance and variation…” Her personal style is a little different than that. “My style is classy and chic but comfy and I wear lots of accessories. I think accessories make the clothes look fabulous and make me feel better. Although I live in a Muslim country, I can wear anything I want. My family and environment are not conservative. We think that believing God is not about our clothes; it is about mind.” says Gamze.

“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” Famous words by Coco Chanel. Gamze can find herself in these words. That is why her must-have is a classic bag, like the Alma bag by Louis Vuitton. She hopes that classics like Louboutin’s will never be out of fashion either. “Louboutin shoes can never be out of fashion, because we need them!”

One day this fashionista hopes to be a designer, like her favorites in the industry, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs and her favorite Turkish designer Hakan Yıldırım (Hakaan).
“I would love to see people around wearing my designs. This dream makes me smile, always. So I never give up dreaming.” Well, if you take a look at her DIY’s on her blog, you will believe that one day she will be!

At the moment she declares her love to fashion by writing on her blog and reading everything about fashion. “For hours clicking all the blogs, looking at lookbook, reading articles and fashion history books. To me fashion is passion or poison, I can’t decide, but in any ways it is part of my life and I like it.”

If there is something women would love to be surrounded by all day, it must be clothes and shoes. For some it is just work, like twenty-one-year old photographer, model and blogger Tricia from Quezon City, Philippines. Her love for fashion goes way back. “When I was in early elementary school, I remember wearing printed leggings with kiddie Doc Martens boots, sailor-type of clothes and dresses with cute ribbons and ruffles a lot. Back then I always thought it was rather odd, especially in a country like the Philippines where people dress more for comfort, not for fashion. But now I’m pretty grateful towards my mom who always dressed me up with clothes that were classic or rather unique.” It is also her mother who influenced her style. “Mom loves classic pieces, as well as clothes that flatter her figure. I caught on as I was growing up, not exactly following trends but investing on clothes that will last me a long time.” And she loved Japanese fashion magazines. “Japanese fashion magazines influenced my style a lot as I reached high school. I found the models and clothes more relatable compared to most fashion magazines with tall Caucasian models,” says Tricia.

Today her style is more influenced by the world than the country she lives in. “My parents loved to take me and my siblings to different countries and I guess I was able to assimilate the fashion culture of the places I've been to. The Philippines isn’t exactly known for extraordinary fashion, and I think it’s mostly the weather that’s hindering Filipinos from dressing up. It’s a tropical country with humid weather, so not a lot of people dare to brave the heat of the sun and stares from their peers,” she says.

To describe her own style she came up with a new term, Sophisti-cute (sophisticated and cute). “Classy with a touch of youthfulness.” If you want to look like this fashionista than write down her style tip. “If it’s meant to be, it will be. I’ll never force my feet into too-small shoes, or my torso into something that can break my ribs." So, it is all about finding your own style and what fits you. That is the message in Tricia her fashion dream as well. “I hope that the Filipino youth will stop wearing what they think is normal and to start wearing what they want without having to be too conscious of what others will say.”

Ana Clara - Rio Branco, Brazil

I guess all of us can still remember our earliest fashion memory. So does Ana Clara, a nineteen-year-old fashionista and student Architecture, Urbanism and Vernacular Letters from Rio Branco, Brazil. “I remember the fashion shows I did as a child, at school or with friends and that I invented my Barbies' clothes and hairstyles. As a kid I also liked to dress up and I invented my own accessories. I wore scarves in place of blouses, filled with hair clips and I cut jeans for making grants. My family thought it was funny and encouraged me to be creative as well. At school everyone thought I was strange,” says Ana Clara.

When it comes to her style of today, she finds her influences worldwide. “I do not follow any particular trend. So you can’t say that something is typical Rio Branco or Brazilian in the way I dress. With globalization and the Internet access I could say my style is typical of the world.” Typical Ana Clara’s style is that she always wears sunglasses. “And black is never out of fashion,” she says.

Unlike many her must-have is not a product, but comfort. “People should not become slaves to fashion. They should know what suits their body and personality. Fashion can be like Art hanging around our bodies, we can show a little of our personality through it. I personally never felt like a fashionista. I just use what I like and I have no intention to launch fashion or to follow it strictly.” That is why her favourite Brazilian designer is Marcelo Sommer. “He creates wonderful prints and makes conceptual fashion. It shows his opinion and artistic character. I like that.”

For the love of fashion Ana Clara writes on her blog where she lose a lot of hours by posting pictures of thing that inspires her. But besides fashion architecture and design is her biggest goal in life. “Fashion is fleeting, but as a form of artistic expression can serve as inspiration for my work as an Architect.”

Giselle Chapman, a fashionista at heart, lives in Surrey, United Kingdom. She can still remember that her mother made a jumpsuit especially for her. She was only three years old. It didn’t last that long till she create a love for fashion. “When I was four years old I did not only choose what I wanted to wear daily, but I also decided not to wear trousers anymore,” says Giselle. She made her statement, but she is not sure where it comes from. “Some say it could be my Italian genes as they have a certain style about them.”

Her style is not influenced by the city she lives in. According to Giselle everyone in Surrey looks the same. “Jogger bottoms, plaid shirts and Ugg boots. This is not my style.” She can find herself in the typical British style. Namely the eccentricity where British fashion is famous for. “I love to mix floral and clash colours and put things together that might not normally work, but with clever styling looks like a perfect clash.” Giselle’s British roots certainly play a role in her love for fashion. Typical her style is to mix a bit of everything. “I love to have a rock chick look but throw in some lace to give it a more gentle feel. I am hardly seen without a pair of heels. And the last six months I wear a lot of black”. Leather pants and a fur coat are essentials in the description of her personal style.

“Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” The famous quote from Coco Chanel. Also Giselle can identify with these famous words. “The Chanel 2.55 bag is a piece that never goes out of fashion. Actually it doesn’t matter if something is in fashion. You should always feel glamorous in what you wear there is now point copying someone else if it is not comfortable for you. Confidence is what makes an outfit look truly amazing.” says Giselle.

Even though it is many years ago that Giselle made her statement for her love for fashion. It is only recently she feels like a real fashionista. “I was in Topshop and I had a pair of pedal pushers and lace up boots and a bib top and these two girls look at each other and said “ she is a fashionista” it was the first time I had heard this word and I thought wow I like that.”

Giselle declares her love for fashion by working in the fashion industry. “ I work for a large UK department store, and have been there now for three years. I really enjoy my job and everything that comes with it. And I started my fashion blog of daily outfits a few months ago. But I would really live my fashion dream by opening my own vintage store.”

It started with rock n roll music and later on grew to fashion. But Zhang Jing from Beijing, China, never forgot her first love in life. Music is still reflected in her style. “Music is my life and an integral part of who I am. I have had my own band, but finally failed, but I still love music.” In many ways this love comes back. Like in her personal style. “I like the style of a more hard feelings, do not like soft little girl style, although this is very attractive, but does not fit my personality.” And also her absolute musthaves have rock n roll elements in them. Metal necklaces, leather jackets, high-heeled boots and personalized hair are just a few of her favourites.

Like her love for rock n roll music she loves the following designers; Alexander Mcqueen, Ann Demeulemeester, Thomas Wylde, Alexander Wang, Manish Arora, Viktor & Rolf, Peter Pilotto, House of Holland, Junya Watanabe “They have a very high state of the art.”says Zhang Jing. Eventough she loves these designers with a worldwide background. She still stays close to her roots. “I am deeply influenced by Chinese culture, as well as Beijing's classical fashion, my fashion and these are inseparable from the combination of classical and modern, my character and outlook on life is the same, my heart also have some conservative elements, which is traditional Chinese.”

Conservatism is also a key word in her style tip to the world. “Never out of fashion are leather jackets and high heels, which I have many some purchased many years ago, the same is very trendy now. To choose classic style and not easily outdated, it will not become invalid with time.”

Zhang jing’s fashion dream is to become a jewelry designer. “I want to be a jewelry designer, now working hard. Most of the jewelry in the pictures are my designs and production, although not yet the right track, but I still hope, because my friends love and willing to buy. I believe it will be good.” Maybe one day she will be as well known as her favourite desginers with Chinese background Alexander Wang and Vera Wang.

Fashion is more than just a part of her life. “I can not imagine life without fashion. It will feel very boring and there is no room for personal creativity.” That is why this fashionsta does a lot for the love of fashion. “ I am a "shopping shopper"(www.dongxi.in) music editor. I also have an independent photography group. We are young people who love music and fashion. In our spare time we often create some photographs. I am inside the task, visual planning, and post-production. Most young people gather in Beijing, where I have two small-scale clothing stores, so good, both earn living expenses, and also satisfy the needs of my clothes. And to have a better understanding of some of the street fashion and to enrich my personal fashion concept, I have a personal picture space. Which often introduce some of my favourite music and fashion, to me, music and fashion is life’s all.”

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”-Coco Chanel. These words from Coco Chanel are twenty-four years old Meijia S. her favourite when it comes to fashion. And also describes where she got her inspiration from. Meijia S. lives in Shanghai, China. “Shanghai is a very modern city. I can always get inspiration from the city. It’s a mix-up.” But not only the city influences the way she dress. “I guess my mom has a huge influence on my style. I always go through her closet, it’s like treasure hunting and I can find some amazing vintage stuffs. Ever since I was five or six I always wore my mom’s high heels, play dress-up. Put on crazy pink blush and super red lipstick, do all the model-like poses when I was in front of the camera.”

Meijia S. broadens her horizons when it comes to fashion, she loves the look of the West too. “I like the American and European style. Let’s be honest, the fashion industry is there. Their style is so chic. From start, I just copy their style, but after all these years, I have my own.” says Meijia S. Her style is simple, fun and has a lot of vintage pieces. These words are translated in her must haves, which are a black blazer, white T-shirt and jeans.

She feels like a fashionista when she dreams of matching her outfits or comes up with a theme for her look. It was not always like that. “When I was in junior high I was so out of fashion” she says. Today she wants to tell a story with her outfits.

I think of stylists when I think of telling stories with outfits. And that is Meijia S. her ultimate fashion dream. “ I would love to work for Vogue or ELLE and go to New York, Paris and all these great cities for Fashionweek.”

She has the right mindset already. “Fashion is my life, my passion. I can’t live without it. My life became so amazing because of fashion. I always play dress-up, asks my mom to take pictures of me, writing my fashion blog. I can still remember taking pictures of a summer outfit on a winter day and got a really bad cold. What can I say? I just love fashion so much. Life’s good because of fashion!”

While most of us try to teach grandma how to be more in fashion, some of us have the opposite. Vanessa is a twenty-six year old fashionista from Vancouver, Canada. Her grandmother’s closet had all the good things to make her fall in love with fashion. “Her closet had a lot of Chanel and fur” she says. Her mother had an influence on her style as well. “They both had very different styles: grandma was very classic; Mom loved modern designers. My mother also subscribed to Vogue/Elle/Harpers…pretty much every magazine under the sun and I grew up reading them and ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the editorials.”

Unlike the laidback city she is from, her style is more vibrant. It is hard to define according to Vanessa. “I like mixing a lot of femme-y things with more masculine silhouettes. Anything mini is usually a go-to, always paired with something baggier or billowy. I’m always changing my mind about how I like to dress.” Although it is not always easy for her to choose what to wear, she has her absolute must haves. “Quality handbags and platform shoes.”

“If there is something that’s never out of fashion it is personal style”, says Vanessa. It is not since yesterday that she has her unique and inspiring style. When I ask her about the first time she felt like a fashionista she says;”When people in high school gawked at my weird outfits.” Well...that’s a good sign! And exacly her style tip to you: “Be different!”

And because of her own great sense of style she is living her dreams now. “Fashion is a lotta fun to me. That’s why for the love of it, I blog and own my online store.”

If vintage would be a religion, Melbourne based fashionista Candice, would be a strong believer. It is because of her mother and paternal grandmother, who influenced her style, that she is a vintage lover at heart. “My mother always sewed both for herself and for us children. She is somewhat adventurous in her style and is always well dressed. Also, my paternal Grandmother has a huge influence on me, as even though fashion played only a utilitarian role in her life, her “make do and mend” attitude meant that I came to appreciate vintage fashion at a very early age. She had beautiful garments from her own childhood that she passed onto me and I wore with pride. I still wear some of those garments today that I first wore at age twelve”!

There is also a little bit of Melbourne is her style.” Although my look is much more dramatic than most Melbournians, it could be said that Melbourne has a taste and penchant for dramatic fashion that I haven’t found living in other Australian cities,” says Candice. But there is more about her vintage style then drama. According to Candice it is strong, memorable and has jewel tones and contrasting colours. “Intense vintage flavour with a good sense of humour and a touch of the unexpected”. Although red lipstick is her must have, she chooses a day without make-up over a day without vintage clothing. That’s how far her love for this style goes. “I’m never in fashion, but always in style”.
